Finding the Time to Do Everything is Difficult

By JSP
Now that the weather is warm, it seems that there are so many things to be done and so little time to do them. The three day Memorial Day Weekend was somewhat helpful. Friday I cut grass, put some new plants in the ground, and weeded a bit too. Saturday through Monday we put in a lot of work creating a large raised garden bed adjacent to our driveway and alley.

I made six trips to Menard's to buy all the stones that I needed to make the garden's retaining wall. If I were to estimate without counting them by hand, there are about 200, 25 pound bricks, which make up all four walls of our 13 x 25 foot garden. The wall is now solid and in place. I have been putting in a dirt foundation and am waiting for some good soil to be brought in to fill it up.

The recent rains have slowed the garden progress. Tonight I was sad because I was quite energetic to do some work, but with the rain, progress was not possible. The tomatoes, peppers and basil which I started from seed are impatient to be planted in their new home. They will probably be getting root bound soon.

When our garden is "finished" with some plants in it, we will post some photos here to illustrate our end product. I am excited to begin planting. This garden is quite large, so by the end of the season, we will likely be giving away vegetables to many of our friends and family.

June will be here shortly and the pressure is on to get so many projects completed. New projects are also on the horizon. On top of these projects, there are the picnics, outdoor events, sporty fun, trips to the cabin and visits from friends from out of town to fit in.

Sadly, work occupies most of the week and there is so little vacation time as I finish my first year in my job. Too bad I was unable to obtain a faculty position, where I might have had a more flexible summer schedule.

Getting Psyched for Art-A-Whirl

By JB aka JayBee
Art-A-Whirl
My neighborhood, Northeast Minneapolis, is home to an incredible event each year called Art-A-Whirl. Since this is our first year in the neighborhood we are really excited to check out the work of local artists. There is even a trolley that will take you from studio to studio so you don't get overly tired while checking out the incredible work of local artists.
